Older Americans Month: Aging Stronger

Older adults are a vital part of our society, contributing in many ways as family members, friends, mentors, and volunteers. As they age, they often face new challenges, but they can also find new opportunities for growth, learning, and connection. Every May, we celebrate Older Americans Month (OAM) to honor and support older adults in their communities.

The theme for OAM 2023 is Aging Stronger. This theme reflects the resilience and determination of older adults to maintain their health, independence, and dignity as they age. It also highlights the need for society to provide them with the resources, services, and respect they deserve.

Here are some ways older adults can age stronger, according to the Administration for Community Living (ACL):

• Stay Active: Physical activity can help older adults maintain their mobility, balance, and cognitive function. It can also reduce their risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Find activities you enjoy, such as walking, dancing, gardening, or swimming.

• Learn and Connect: Lifelong learning and social engagement can boost older adults' mental health, cognitive function, and social support. Join a book club, take a class, learn a new skill, or participate in community events.

• Stay Safe and Healthy: Older adults may face health and safety risks such as falls, medication errors, and scams. To minimize these risks, they can take preventive measures such as getting regular checkups, managing their medications, and staying alert to scams. • Advocate for Yourself: Older adults have a right to be treated with respect and dignity, and to have their voices heard. They can speak up for their needs and rights, and seek support from family, friends, and professionals.
